How can I knit a colored square within a square of another color?

If I knit a square in a square with sides of the square between the two colors are not connected. How can I knit all in one piece without sewing side?

This is called Intarsia or picture knitting. When you change colors, make sure that you have brought it around the first color so it does not leave a vacuum.
