How is parking at South Rim of the Grand Canyon?

I read in the travel guides I should take a bus or a train at South Rim of Grand Canyon because there is limited parking in summer. We are going the 1st week of August. Can you drive and if so, how hours does it take to get to get a parking space?

Certainly it drive and use Desert View as your main entrance GCNP no entry Tusayan. Desert View is better for a couple of reasons, the first being obviously the view of the canyon is much better. Contrary to the view the region by the hotels, Desert View / Navajo Pt / PT Lipan [view my favorite) The river is not only visible but it is a characteristic dominant in the landscape. Furthermore all GCN geology is present. Another thing that makes Desert View tour so much better is required to get there. Let travelers north or south on U.S. 89 - which is incredibly beautiful in itself and as spectacular GCNP to run uphill. The trip to SR 64 from Williams to Tuysayan / GCNP is boring. If the use of U.S. 89 [and you should] get gas at Gray Mountain and Cameron before using SR 64 to Park. Cameron Trading Post is definitely worth a visit and was fairly decent place to stay and also get a meal – and their stock is amazing Pendelton blankets. The Trading Post is just north of U.S. 64 jct 89/sr. Btw what is your starting point?
