How do I start a magazine with a niche business model similar to Readers Digest?

I am particularly interested the legal aspects involved in the identification of content in other magazines and reuse them in my publication after editing / Condensation. Should I get permission from them? Should I pay? Do I share the profits with them? How did Reader's Digest to do all this? Are there case studies that provide details?
