What is the little plastic model called the infantry army uses for navigation and map reading?

There are about 10 years, I spent a year in the ROTC program and learned some basic navigation. It seems there was a small square of clear plastic model that was used in addition to the compass and map to help navigate. We have kept our hats. Does anyone have any idea of what I mean? What was this thing called and what was it used?
