Why are lenses generally limited to 2X or 3X magnification?

The magnification of the lens could be made very much by using a short focal length lens. However, why are lenses generally limited to 2X or 3X magnification?

This is not the size of the lens that counts is the number of optical components whose magnification can be multiplied together to determine the total magnification. For example, if you had two optical lenses placed together, one with 10x and another 5x then you get 50x.
