What type of lens should I use for outdoor photography?

I intend to travel where I'll be taking a lot photos outdoors, especially architecture, but the landscape as well. I own a Sony A100 digital SLR and I was wondering if a wide angle lens would be something for the investment, also what length do I look like I anticipate needing some zoom. And anyone who has experience with a polarizing filter? I heard it helps to reduce the mist, and reflections from glass? Appreciate the help!
